The 2017 edition of the event “Incontri di Fisica” was held in the days 4-6 October. Profiting of the availability of pre-production components of the Mu2e calorimeter, the “Particle Detection with Scintillating Materials” Working Group proposed the measurement of the properties of scintillating crystals and Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs). The training started with an introductory seminar on particle detectors and specific applications to calorimetry. Other two presentations followed, describing the measurements planned for the hands-on activities:
F. Happacher – Particle Detection with Scintillating Materials: introduction
R. Donghia – Crystal Test
E. Diociaiuti – Mu2e SiPMs Test
Once in the Mu2e clean room, participants have been divided in two groups, and both of them have performed alternately some measurements of scintillating crystals and silicon photo-multipliers properties. For the crystals, light yield, longitudinal response uniformity and signal shape of pure CsI and BaF2 crystals have been measured. Results obtained for the two materials have been compared and discussed. For the SiPMs, I-V curves have been measured. This has been done both for irradiated and not-irradiated sensors at different temperatures. Also for this set of measurements, comparison of the results obtained with the two samples have been compared and discussed.
