Work Packages

WP1: g-2 detectors

  • WP Leader: M. Lancaster (UCL)
  • WP Co-Leader: B. King (Liverpool)

The objectives of this WP are the development, construction, test and commissioning of the tracking detector and of its back-end readout electronics and DAQ, the laser DAQ interface boards and the SiPM Bias Voltage Supply.

WP2: Mu2e detectors

  • WP Leader: S. Miscetti (INFN-LNF)
  • WP Co-Leader: M. Martini (INFN-LNF)

The objectives of this Work Package are the development, design, construction, test and commissioning of the crystal calorimeter and HPGe monitor systems for the Mu2e experiment. Most of the work will be done in USA by exporting our detector knowledge and related measurement techniques after completion of the R&D phase. This package involves also the design, prototyping phase and production of all related mechanics and electronics. A commissioning phase with cosmic rays of the first assembled calorimeter disk is also part of this working package as well as the installation and test of the HPGe monitor system.

WP3: Calibration

  • WP Leader: C. Ferrari (INFN-LNF)
  • WP Co-Leader: D. Cauz (INFN-UD)

The objectives are the development, construction, and assembly of the calibration systems developed in Europe for g-2 and Mu2e detectors. The most challenging item is the high-precision laser calibration system for g-2 (g-2_las), which will be installed and commissioned in time for the beginning of data taking (2017). A similar laser monitor system, mu2e_las, will be designed and built to control the response and timing of the Mu2e calorimeter system. The mu2e_las requires less precision in the monitoring values but has to work at reduced laser wavelength (220 nm). Synergy between INFN groups will be necessary for the monitoring station. For g-2, a system to calibrate and align the straws must also be developed. This software calibration and alignment will be run several times a day during data-taking so that environmental changes on e.g. drift velocity can be tracked and incorporated in the track reconstruction. This will require to develop an interface to the offline conditions and calibration database that will be jointly developed by the tracker (UK) and calorimeter (INFN) teams.

WP4: Software tools

  • WP Leader: R. Donghia (INFN-LNF)
  • WP Co-Leader: R. Chislett (UCL)

The objectives of this WP are the development and commissioning of the software packages needed to simulate the detectors being built in Europe and to perform data reconstruction. Data analysis will proceed in three steps as commonly happens in the High Energy Physics community: (1) a first stage of simulation of the detectors that will be continuously improved as relevant parameters will be updated after/during the construction, calibration and commissioning phases; (2) a parallel stage of data reconstruction to determine the important physical values of the particles in the detectors (position, energy, momentum, time, particle identity) that will be exercised with simulation and test-beam data and during commissioning; (3) dedicated data analysis procedures based on steps (1) and (2) to reach the physics goals of the experiment. Since g-2 is in a more advanced stage with respect to Mu2e, we expect to contribute also to phase (3) i.e. data analysis. For Mu2e, phase (3) is beyond MUSE timeline.

WP5: Dissemination and outreach

  • WP Leader: A. Lusiani (INFN-PI)
  • WP Co-Leader: D. Glenzinski (Fermilab)

Promotion of the communication between the scientific community and the general public and increase of science awareness.

WP6: Transfer of knowledge

  • WP Leader: A. Ferrari (HZDR)
  • WP Co-Leader: F. Spinella (INFN-PI)

The objective of this work package is to coordinate all the activities dedicated to the training of research and industry personnel, to achieve a substantial transfer of knowledge among network participants and to increase the quality of the research and the competitiveness of the partners. Our final goal is to provide the trained personnel with enough capabilities to become independent in their new competences.

WP7: Management

  • WP Leader: S. Giovannella (INFN-LNF)
  • WP Co-Leader: S. Donati (INFN-PI)

Management will ensure an efficient, transparent and productive organization of the project, to supervise secondments and to monitor the scientific activities and the fulfilment of the deliverables. Moreover, it has to guarantee the maximization of the knowledge sharing among the involved institutions, equal opportunity for all participants and the visibility of the project.
